Wuppertal counted for years as one of the bicycle unfriendly cities in Germany, but now something is happening. Mobility initiatives, cycling clubs and, above all, the Nordbahntrasse give the town Bergischen a better reputation. Since the opening in 2014, the Nordbahntrasse has triggered a veritable bicycle hype in the city. About the old railway line between Vohwinkel and Wichlinghausen, almost everything, can be reached by bike over the entire valley axis. Thanks to the small incline, in the direction of Wichlinghausen, cyclists can commute with the bike at any fitness level on the 12.8 kilometer long route. The Nordbahntrasse serves as a commute and leisure route. It is used by both pedestrians and cyclists, cars are not to be found here. Only on a short link at Wichlinghausen the path leads over a sidewalk along a road (about 550 meters).

Along the route you will find more and more beautiful restaurants. A highlight is the Mirker station (komoot.de/highlight/171910), which can be found approximately halfway. Here you can get delicious coffee and cake from the Café Hutmacher or good Currywurst from the snack Schmackes. The area also called Utopia city offers a lot of culture. Concerts, readings, flea markets and festivals take place here around the old Mirke train station.

The route leads through numerous tunnels that provide for recurrent short cooling in the summer. At each start / end point you can extend and combine the Nordbahn route in many directions. In Vohwinkel you will find access to the panoramic cycle path and the corkscrew train. In Wichlinghausen you come to the coal railway, the direction Ruhr leads.

From west to east, the northern railway line stretches over 23 kilometers across the Wuppertal urban area. It connects the conurbations of Vohwinkels, Elberfeld and Barmen almost without crossing and completely flat with each other. Lined up like a string of pearls are numerous attractions and sights along the route. Here we would like to provide a brief overview of the - sometimes literal - highlights of the Nordbahn route.

The Nordbahntrasse is part of the former Rhenish route on the city of Wuppertal. The railway line from Dusseldorf to Dortmund was opened in 1879, shut down in 1999, and expanded from 2006 to the bicycle, pedestrian and inline skating route. Due to the topography of Wuppertal, the route leads through seven tunnels, on four large viaducts and over 19 bridges (wuppertal.de/nordbahntrasse), an unusual backdrop for a bike path.

The association WUPPERTALBEWEGUNG e.V. takes care of the development and maintenance of the route and many (hands-on) actions along the route: nordbahntrasse.de

The Nordbahntrasse is a must and almost does not need to be explained. A very great leisure offer. With great views beautiful viaducts, rugged cliffs and in between, again and again traces of the old use. That's the recipe for the almost 20km long adventure trail

Prima bike path, potteben and great to drive. Due to the perfect asphalt many inliners, but all (cyclists, inliners, pedestrians) were nice and considerate with each other!
