Around 790, the first church in Herzfeld was built by Ida, who was canonized in the year 980. In the noteworthy crypt with the tomb of the saint, the old foundations can still be seen. The church is open daily from 8:30 AM to 6 PM. More info can be found at sanktida.de.

A magnificent "Church"
Hersfeld is the oldest pilgrimage site in Westphalia. People have been making pilgrimages to the grave of St. Ida since 825.
In 2011, Pope Benedict XVI elevated this church to a papal Basilica Minor through Bishop Felix from Münster.
It is also called "the white Cathedral on the Lippe".

St. Ida in Herzfeld is really cooped up between the many houses around it. Nevertheless, the church is very imposing and one of the landmarks. All around there are restaurants and a supermarket.
