    WATERFALL PATH

A dazzling spectacle and technical pioneering achievement

The «Cascada da Bernina» waterfall trail. Translated from the Romansh, the word "Cascada" stands for waterfall. Because, over around two hundred meters in altitude, the mountain stream “Ova da Bernina” plunges towards the bottom of the valley. In addition to a lavish spectacle, visitors can also expect pioneering technical achievements. The Rhaetian Railway winds its way around tight curves and over historic viaducts on this passage. The trains master the differences in height without any cogwheels and have been electrified since 1908. The railway line on the Bernina Line is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And even the world-famous panorama trains of the Bernina Express cross the waterfall. The neighboring Morteratsch power plant has been operated with water from the Bernina stream since 1891. The extensively modernized facility is the oldest existing hydropower plant operated by the energy supply company Repower.

    information

The boarding point is between the Morteratsch train station and the public car park. The path then leads up to several waterfall platforms - accompanied by a view of the Bernina massif and its glacier world. The new waterfall path is ideal for walking excursions from Pontresina and Morteratsch. It is also ideal as a section on more ambitious hikes. The Cascada da Bernina is located on the Via Valtellina hiking route (long-distance hiking trail and former mule route).

The waterfall path: A worthwhile ascent from Morteratsch over the stepped terrain to the Bernina suot plain. Very nice hiking trail (and parallel MTB routes including downhill route) over several platforms, past small waterfalls.
