The monastery Neuzelle was founded in the 13th century as Abbey of the house Wettin and existed until 1817. Subsequently, the Cistercian Abbey was secularized. The convent was rebuilt in 2018 and belongs to the Austrian abbey Heiligenkreuz.

The monastery is not only the landmark of Neuzelle, it also dominates the whole place with its splendor. The lush, baroque decoration in the monastery church is remarkable and the garden is also beautifully landscaped.

The monastery Neuzelle was donated on 12 October 1268 by margrave Henry the Illustrious from the house Wettin in memory of his two days earlier deceased wife Agnes, in order to open up the acquired from the Piast manorial between Oder and thieves in the settlement area of the Sorbs Christianity, to develop and use economically. The monastery Neuzelle was a spin-off of the mother monastery Altzella (Cella) in Saxony; a convent existed since 1281.

The Neuzelle monastery complex was built between 1300 and 1330 on a mountain spur that juts into the Oderniederung, on which a plateau had previously been created. The three-aisled hall church of the abbey was executed in the style of brick Gothic in the typical brick style of the area.

Around 1760, a baroque-style garden was built east of the two monastic churches, which is divided into an abbey and a convent garden on an area of about 4 hectares. In contrast to other gardens in Brandenburg, Neuzelle later did not undergo a Rococo or landscaped transformation. The baroque paths and water facilities, the steeply sloping terraces, the orangery and parts of the historical plant life were preserved. The monastery garden is therefore today the only baroque garden in the state of Brandenburg.

From the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route made a detour to Neuzelle and also stayed there, because there is just too much to admire. And the café in the wonderful ambience of the monastery garden is highly recommended!

The monastery is worth a visit. The landmark of Neuzelle is not unknown for a reason. Both the monastery garden, the monastery church and the attached monastery brewery are only recommended for a visit.

Even the view of Neuzelle from the Oder-Neisse Cycle Route is unique. The district with the monastery and the brewery is beautifully landscaped, all very well maintained, just "worth a bike trip".
