On the initiative of an art collector, a sculpture park has been created here that is unrivaled in Sweden, the Pilane Sculpture Park.

At the very top, Anna is enthroned with a radiant white facial sculpture by the Spanish artist Jaume Plensa. She has a sister in Ekeberg Park in Oslo.

19 other works of art are currently (= 2024) placed in the landscape and connected by hiking trails. These include, for example, "Iron Figures" by Maats Lodé (S) or "Cancan" by Anna Fasshauer (D)

The park is not wheelchair accessible.

How long does it typically take to visit Pilane Sculpture Park?

Most visitors spend between 2 to 3 hours exploring the park. This allows ample time to walk the main routes, appreciate the various sculptures, take in the views, and learn about the historical monuments. If you wish to linger at specific artworks or enjoy a picnic, you might extend your visit.

What are the parking options at Pilane Sculpture Park?

Pilane Sculpture Park provides dedicated parking facilities for visitors. However, during peak season, especially on weekends and sunny days, the parking lot can fill up quickly. Arriving earlier in the day is advisable to secure a spot and avoid crowds.

Can I reach Pilane Sculpture Park using public transport?

While Pilane Sculpture Park is primarily accessed by car, it is possible to reach the island of Tjörn via public transport. From Gothenburg, you can take a bus to Tjörn. However, direct public transport to the park entrance itself is limited, and you may need to arrange for a taxi or be prepared for a longer walk from the nearest bus stop.

What should I wear when visiting Pilane Sculpture Park?

Given the natural terrain and potential for varying weather conditions, it's best to wear comfortable, sturdy walking shoes or hiking boots. Layers of clothing are also recommended, as the coastal location can be breezy, even on warm days. A waterproof jacket might be useful, especially outside of peak summer. Don't forget sun protection like a hat and sunscreen.

These areas offer a range of restaurants, guesthouses, and hotels.

Is Pilane Sculpture Park accessible for wheelchair users or those with limited mobility?

Due to its natural terrain, which includes gravel paths, grassy hills, and uneven trails, Pilane Sculpture Park is unfortunately not wheelchair accessible. Visitors with limited mobility may find it challenging to navigate the full extent of the park. Some areas might be accessible, but the main routes to view all sculptures and historical sites involve walking over varied ground.

Beyond the sculptures, what historical features can I explore at Pilane Sculpture Park?

Pilane is not just a sculpture park; it's also a significant Iron Age settlement and grave field. As you walk through the landscape, you'll encounter approximately 90 ancient monuments, including stone circles, burial mounds, circular stone grave markers, and standing stones, dating from 1-600 AD. These historical elements are seamlessly integrated into the park, offering a fascinating glimpse into Sweden's past alongside the contemporary art.

How does the seasonal exhibition change each year?

Each year, new artists, both Nordic and international, are invited to exhibit their works, ensuring a fresh experience with every visit. While iconic pieces like Jaume Plensa's "Anna" are permanent fixtures, the majority of the sculptures change annually, offering a unique curatorial theme and new discoveries for returning visitors.
