Located in Theotokopoulou Park, the sculpture depicts one of the greatest painters in the world, Dominikos Theotokopoulos, born in Heraklion, Crete. Also known as "El Greco", Dominikos Theotokopoulos was born in Heraklion in 1541 and died in Toledo in 1614 , Spain. He takes his first courses at the Ag art and grammar school. Aikaterini. In 1566 he went to Venice because he was looking to immerse himself more in the currents of the Italian Renaissance. There he found work in Titian's workshop and stayed with him for 4 years, while at the same time he was also involved in sculpture. Then he goes to Rome, where he is called El Greco for the first time. He arrived in Spain (Madrid) in 1575 and in Toledo in 1577. He works alongside the architect Herera, who adorns the Escorial library.

The small town of FODELE near Heraklion has been accepted as the birthplace of "El Greco". There in the small El Greco Museum (which is also in cooperation with Toledo) in his rebuilt "birthplace" you can see the facility as it must have been in the 16th century. Also a painting workshop and many pictures by El Greco digitally and as reproductions. I've been there twice. Definitely worth seeing!

The Greek.
"El Greco" never mentioned his place of birth and only ever called the island of Crete as his home. Many years after his death, some handwritten notes by the artist were found in Toledo (Spain), in which he mentions that he was in the shadow of a Byzantine chapel from the 11th century 25 km from Candia (today's Heraklion) grew up.
