The Statue of Erotokritos in Kornarou Square in Heraklion shows Erotokrit and Arena, epic heroes from the "Erotokrit" poem, written by Vitsentzos Kornarou after whom the square is named. The Erotocritos (c. 1640) is a masterpiece of Cretan Renaissance poetry (end of the XVI - early XVII century), which some have called «the national poem of Crete», and still a great favorite among the people, not only in Crete but also in the rest of Greece. Village taverns, and at least two in Athens, often bear that name. This poem, a love epic, describes the adventures of the hero, Erotocritos, whose father Pezostratos is one of the advisers of Heracles, the Athenian King. The period is an imaginary one in the far past. Erotocritos and Aretousa, the daughter of King Heracles and Queen Artemis, fall in love and wish to marry. This union between a commoner and a princess - an unheard of thing for the time when the poem was written - meets with many obstacles and misfortunes until the final happy ending. Heraklion was in Minoan times, about 3500 years ago, the port of the Minoan palace settlement of Knossos. The Greeks then gave the city its present name several centuries later. He is derived from the mythical hero Heracles (Hercules). In the Venetian period, the city was called Candia and was the administrative seat of the Serenissima.
