Best Hikes to Doktors Loch

Tips

  • "The name 'Doktors Loch' probably goes back to its use by the respected medical councilor Dr. Verlage from Riesenbeck. Probably around 1850 he used the fish ponds as the leaseholder of the Kaiserei and the rock grotto at the ponds for his purposes. Documents about a lease contract with Dr. Verlage should be present in the archives of the Surenburg house. These ponds are not yet shown in the original map from 1827. The owners of the emperor then and now are the Heereman von der Surenburg family. To the left of Doctor's Hole is an air raid shelter about seven meters long It was created in 1944 as an extension of an existing natural chasm. It was to be connected to the rock grotto. The grotto was then to serve as an emergency exit for the tunnel. Because the war ended in April 1945, the emergency exit was no longer necessary "(source: 2009 SUER, published by the Ibbenbüren City Museum)
