Bembridge Windmill is one of the most iconic landmarks on the Isle of Wight. Built in 1700, the Grade I-listed structure was last operated in 1913 but retains most of its original machinery. You can climb to the top of the windmill and then descend its four floors to learn how it worked. The mill is managed by the National Trust. Entry costs £6 for adults, £3 for children, and £15 for families. For more information, visit: nationaltrust.org.uk/bembridge-windmill.

Built in 1700, only surviving windmill on IOW. National Trust property. Open March to October. At the moment it has no sails and the NT needs to raise £50,000 for new ones. Well worth a visit. Just had the New sails added. Great to see it restored!

These old windmills are the best proof that people were clever enough a number of centuries ago - long before the discovery of electricity and the inventions that resulted from it - to harness the power of the elements for their own purposes: no human or animal muscle power is needed for the grinding process, but the wind captured by the wings is enough to drive the heavy millstones and thus, for example, to grind flour from grain (grain mills) or to press oil from olives (oil mills). Unfortunately, they are often only technical and historical evidence of a long tradition of craftsmanship, because most of the old mills have been abandoned over time.
