Charcoal burning is an ancient craft that is almost extinct today, but in the past it was a decisive factor in the industrialization of entire regions: the blast furnaces of the iron and steel industry, for example, depended on charcoal to reach the operating temperature required for ore smelting. As a result, however, whole areas were once completely deforested by charcoal burning and it is only thanks to later reforestation that forests have emerged again and nature can be seen.

Hiking

For iron processing enormous amounts of charcoal were needed. Especially red and hornbeam were charred in such kilns for the blast furnaces. Today, all charcoal burners have died - as a reminder, this 32 -meter-high kiln was built. It is designed so that its internal structure is recognizable.
