In pre-Christian times the Wilde Stein was supposedly a cult site. His name is a shortening of “the wild woman rock”. During the witch trials of the 16th and 17th centuries, the women accused of witchcraft admitted under torture that they had ridden with the devil on the Wild Stone. In Napoleonic times, part of the rock was blasted for road and bridge construction work.
Today the Wilde Stein is a striking formation above the city of Büdingen that serves as a tourist attraction and viewing point that allows a view of almost the entire city.
