"[...] After the Second World War, the French occupiers cut down the most beautiful trees in the Stumpfwald. The 'Diemer Cross', a memorial stone for the forester Wilhelm Diemer, who died in 1959 and who played a significant role in the reforestation of the Stumpfwald, commemorates the necessary reforestation in the 1950s." rheinpfalz.de/lokal/gruenstadt_artikel,-die-geheimnisse-des-lauberhofs-_arid,5544809.htmlThis memorial stone is located at a very large intersection of 4 forestry roads. Hence my assumption: Here the word "cross" certainly does NOT mean a Christian symbol, but a (traffic) cross, i.e. an intersection. The rest area at this point currently (as of Jan. 2025) looks very unkempt: The two benches are now quite dilapidated. And the two beautiful trees that once stood here were only recently felled (without being "cleaned up" afterwards).
ADDENDUM: I was informed by the Göllheim-Kerzenheim forestry district in February 2025 that this rest area would be more beautiful again will be prepared!

Memorial stone "Diemer Cross", Carlsberg, 1959. There are two shady benches there, but despite intensive research I could not find any further details about it...
