They were created by the mining of the so-called Bohnerzes, which was processed because of its high iron content in the ironworks of Königsbronn. The sinks created by the mining filled with water and formed the lake district in its present form. Today, especially in midsummer, when the lakes are almost completely covered by water lilies, the lakes are a popular destination.
