The hamlet of Mogno, which belongs to the municipality of Fusio and is close to the village, has been repeatedly hit by floods and landslides. In 1986, the church, which dates back to 1638, was destroyed by an avalanche. A new, modern church was built in Mogno according to plans by Mario Botta, and is one of the greatest architectural attractions in Tessin.
Mogno is also home to one of the oldest barns; the year 1651 is still clearly visible.

On April 25, 1986, in the morning at 7.15 a.m., an avalanche fell in Mogno in the Maggia valley and destroyed the small church of John the Baptist from the 17th century. A committee for the reconstruction of the church is immediately convened and the architect Mario Botta is given the appropriate assignment. The project and its implementation are accompanied by numerous polemics. Nevertheless, architect Botta was able to create one of his most important works here. The church we see today is an answer "that underlines the positive character of human efforts to rebuild" by confronting destructive nature, as Botta says.
