The church and monastery were built as a Benedictine abbey at the beginning of the 13th century. It survived the Mongol invasion of 1241 but burned down along with the monastery in the 15th century. It was rebuilt during the reign of King Matthias 1458-90, but burned down by the Turks in 1529. The towers and vault of the nave collapsed. Only the exterior and the ribbed vault in the western part have been largely preserved. In 1631 the church became property of the Jesuits. They repaired the church, replacing the destroyed medieval vault with a barrel vault. In 1683 the church was set on fire again by the Turks, but was restored by the Jesuits in the 18th century (including today's baroque vault). After the dissolution of the order, the church was fundamentally restored in two stages, 1862-65 and 1872-79 (including the interior of the church and the spire).
