Taivassalo's mother church had the following chapel parishes: Iniö (until 1911), Kustavi (until 1874), and Velkua (until 1913).
The earliest of the church's abundant paintings date from the 15th century. A crucifix from the 14th century is among Finland's national treasures. The hero statue in front of the church, dedicated to those who fell in 1939–1944, is the work of artist Jussi Vikainen.
