The origin of the place falls into the high medieval settlement of the "Northern Forest". As with numerous places in the Bavarian Forest, the suffix "-reut" (clearing, cultivating) indicates that the village of Ensmannsreut was founded by clearing. The first documented mention of the place was in 1236, when Bishop Rüdiger of Passau gave the impoverished women of the monastery in Niedernburg income for the purchase of fish during Lent, including two pounds pfennig (480 pfennigs) from the village "Enczemannesrawte". The place was on the Golden Trail, a salt trade route connecting the Danube and Bohemia.
