The bridge is built of natural stone and spans an old arm of the Saale, which today no longer carries water at normal water levels, however, serves as a tidal flume in floods. At this point, the trade route from Magdeburg to Halle (Saale) already ran in the Middle Ages. In the 16th century, there was a bridge at today's location. The present bridge was built in 1786/1787, parts of older predecessors were included. Six pointed vaulted arches were created. From both banks massive ramps lead to the bridge. In the years 1946 and 1973 and in the period from 1999 major repairs were carried out.
At the bridge ramp on the Neustädter side are two historic emblem stone inserted, which were originally on the defunct bridge portal of the Bernburg city fortification.

Must be used in the case of strong floods of the Saale.
Then one of the few ways to get north.

The Waldauer flood bridge is an important technical monument, which was created when the
Talstadt is opened for car traffic due to flooding of the Saale (otherwise only pedestrians and cyclists). The bridge is a 6-bay quarry stone building with mighty river pillars.
It was built as a wooden bridge in 1644 and was often destroyed by floods and ice. The building from 1787 has remained essentially unchanged until today. It is the old transition to the village of Waldau (district of Bernburg since 1871) and is reminiscent of the medieval island location of the city. In the ramp of the bridge on the Bernburg side, two heraldic stones of the broken Neustädter Tor are inserted.
