The rock was probably created by the collision of two tectonic plates. The locals boast it to be the second best viewpoint in the world, just behind Rio‘s Sugar Loaf. The view (and ascent via >700 stairs) is indeed breathtaking

The indispensable ascent of the Piedra El Peñon can be nicely integrated into a tour around Guatapé. The best time to go is in the morning, as it avoids the usual crowds and often has better weather. On the way there you follow the Carretera, mostly on paved paths next to the road. After the ascent, you follow a consistently concrete path to the southeast and circle the eastern arms of the reservoir, which I also like to call drowned valleys. The whole tourist infrastructure nuisance along the main route has suddenly disappeared and you hike through a beautiful natural and cultural landscape, the latter characterized by grazing and cultivation of really well-kept fincas, including some heavyweights, which are often behind wide driveways with large no pase - Hide Privado signs. Those who enjoy bird life should bring binoculars and time. Halfway there is a small tienda...

For us, the visit to the Piedra del Penol was an absolute highlight of our trip to Colombia. After a brisk climb up the granite monolith, you get a unique view of the reservoir, which has flooded many valleys. Unfortunately, you have to put up with the usual tourist hustle and bustle if you can't avoid off-peak times. The surrounding area is attractive and offers opportunities for hiking or cycling tours.
