A relic of the "Cold War" is the slot lock at Altmühlsee.
In the event of an attack by Warsaw Pact troops, it was assumed that the numerically superior enemy would invade southern Germany from the territory of the former Czechoslovakia with strong armored units.
This rare anti-tank barrier is non-destructive and has a load capacity of 60 tons. This lock was supposed to prevent tanks from using the causeway. The barrier consists of 25 plug-in shafts that are embedded in a 1 m thick concrete slab. The associated plug-in girders (2.20 m long double-T girders with a special alloy) are stored next to it.

The plug-shaft lock at Gunzenhausen was in the line of the Altmühl. It had become necessary as a result of the construction of the Altmühlsee, which, in conjunction with the Brombachspeicher, was to improve the water management situation in Franconia. The 1984 built facility with the object number WUG-0010 is located in the southern abutment of the outlet structure of the Altmühlsee. It consists of 25 flush-mounted, 80 cm deep and 40 cm wide manholes embedded in a 1 m thick concrete slab.
