Around 1200 the Wennigsen monastery was founded for Augustinian choir women. After the almost complete destruction of the complex in 1626, reconstruction work dragged on for more than a century. The Romanesque defensive tower (around 1150) and some parts of the wall are the oldest part of the monastery church. The monastery buildings, as you see them today, were built between 1707 and 1725. However, the history of the monastery goes back much further. It was founded around 1200 as a monastery for Augustinian choir nuns. The oldest document dates from 1224. After 1542, when the Reformation also reached the Calenberger Land, the transition to a Protestant women's monastery took place. Since then, a Protestant women's convent has lived here. Today, the Wennigsen monastery offers a wide range of activities: in addition to meditation courses and open meditation days, the retreat option "temporary monastery" and monastery days are also offered.
