DescriptionThe route along the Lužná starts at the beautifully designed spring in the form of a small chapel. It rises very close to the border at an altitude of almost 1000 m, high in the mountains that are not far above 1000 m. On the Austrian side, the mountain range is called the Bohemian Forest (Šumava), on the Czech side it is called the "Novohradské Mountains". The small stream flows down into the valley where the border runs, gets bigger, flows for a few kilometers on Czech territory and then changes back to Austria. There is no hiking trail through this part of the river basin. Therefore, our route runs through the municipality of Karlstift and after six kilometers leads back to the Lužná.

Soon after, the route splits into two alternative routes. The main route continues into the beautiful valley and through the municipality of St. Martin to the historic town of Weitra. The second variant leads to the highest point of the entire route, to the Nebelstein (1017 m), and from here back down to Weitra. A few kilometers before the largest city on the Austrian side - Gmünd - the route runs over a wide mountain plateau, rich in water, and at the edge of the mountain plateau near Gmünd past large stone blocks, which lie individually or in clusters and are typical of the "Waldviertel" area.

The historic center of Gmünd with its small, very beautiful town hall and the famous facades of some Renaissance houses offers an experience for fans of classical architecture. Also interesting is the waterfall that the Lainsitz forms in the middle of the city, right at the border crossing to České Velenice. From Gmünd the route leads north through a slightly undulating landscape with many beautiful forests, parallel to the Czech border. In the municipality of Brand there is a beautiful pond with a large swimming pool. Czechs will probably be reminded of the landscape of the Czech Canada near Nová Bystřice, where both landscapes merge.

The Lainsitz, Lužnice in the Czech Republic, is a tributary of the Vltava in Austria and the Czech Republic. Its total length is about 200 kilometers, 43 of which are in Austria. However, the German name in Bohemia was not Lainsitz, but Luschnitz. [Wikipedia]
