Wiecker wooden drawbridge

The Ryck flows between the districts of Wieck and Eldena near Greifswald. Both districts are connected by the Wiecker bridge. The Wiecker drawbridge was built in 1887 based on the Dutch model and was carried out by the designer and wooden ship builder August Spruth. This wooden drawbridge replaced the ferry service that connected Wieck and Eldena until then. A few pedestrians, animals and horse-drawn vehicles have crossed the bridge. Bridges of this type were very common in this region in earlier centuries. As a technical monument that has become rare, the Wiecker Bridge is under monument protection. The bridge, faithfully reconstructed in 1993/94, has become a landmark of the old fishing village Wieck and the city of Greifswald.
