The execution site was used from the end of the 17th century until 1854. The last execution in Sweden was carried out in 1910 in Stockholm. The death penalty for crimes in peacetime was abolished in Sweden on June 30, 1921. For crimes committed by military personnel in wartime, abolition only occurred in 1973.

In the 1930s, archaeologists discovered a burial ground in the gravel pit next to the execution site. As early as the Bronze Age – almost three thousand years ago – people were buried here.
