Here is some information from the website of the Church of Werdenfleth:
In the year 809, the town of Beienfleth (“Beyenfleth”) was first mentioned. In the yearbooks of Einhard (he lived 770-840 and was a confidant of Charlemagne) Beienfleth is listed as the place of encounter between Charlemagne's envoy, Count Egbert, and the Danish king Göttrik. In 1108 a chapel was built under the protection of the first dikes. The foundations of the sanctuary probably date from this period. In the second half of the 12th century the Dutch come into the country; they drain and cultivate the lower marsh. They bring the art of brick-making with them and build a new church, which they dedicate to St. Nicholas, the patron saint of sailors. In 1325, St. Nicolai is mentioned in a document in Beidenfleth in the directory of the Hamburg Cathedral. In 1962 the church was thoroughly renovated and restored under the direction of the church and art painter Hermann Wehrmann from Glückstadt. After that, ongoing conservation measures took place, so that the church is currently in very good condition. The bronze baptismal font was cast in 1345, probably on the Glockengiesserwall in Hamburg. The exact date can be seen in mirror writing on the upper edge: 1345 on the day of Mark the Evangelist
