The area of Las Medulas was an important gold mine in the time of Hispania, which belonged to the Roman Empire. The Romans discovered in the first century AD that there was gold in the ground here. At that time, it was an important means of payment, they conquered the region and put the former inhabitants, the Astures, to work for them for 2 centuries. It is estimated that about 10 to 20,000 workers worked in the mine.

The other viewpoint is nearby and however only accessible via a ticket office. The opening hours on the sign at the entrance are not correct, a great pity.
