Originally, there was a farm surrounded by a moat, known as Goed ter Heiden or te Craeyeneste. In 1360, it belonged to the Ghent patrician Willem Bette. Later documents also mention a lease farm. A document from 1776 proves that the then owner, Canon Van de Woestijne, had an avenue laid out, suggesting that it was already a country estate at that time. The estate is also marked on the Ferraris maps (1771–1778), more precisely as Blauw Casteelken.
