The origins date back to 1447, when the local community, to implore the end of a devastating plague epidemic, built a small votive temple dedicated to the Virgin Mary in a single day.
Between 1736 and 1741, the building underwent a significant transformation, giving the basilica its current baroque appearance. The interior is adorned with frescoes by Francesco Mancini, including the Assumption of Mary on the ceiling, and works by Sebastiano Conca, such as the Immaculate Conception and the Nativity of Mary.
