Originally, Tranekær Castle was a heavily fortified castle with a moat and drawbridge, dating back to the 13th century. The current form is due to Landgrave Ahlefeldt-Laurvig, who had the manorial complex extensively renovated between 1859 and 1865. Around 1950, the castle received its striking façade, painted in English red. A visit is only possible on a few fixed dates in the year. You can stop off at the “Generalen” restaurant directly below the castle.
