The approximately 20 hectare nature reserve "Barley" is located east of Dörnten in the municipality of Liebenburg in the northern Harz foothills. The nature reserve is a former ore mine with steep slopes that surround a heavily chilled, 20 to 300 m wide depression. At the bottom of the valley there are numerous small bodies of water that are of great importance as spawning biotopes for amphibians. After abandonment - the Barley pit was mined until 1967 - the area was naturally green.
