The Füssenich nature reserve[3] (officially Neffelsee[4], also called Füssenich Lake) is a residual open-cast mining lake that was formed around 1967 through the recultivation of the "Zülpich-Mitte" brown coal open-cast mine (formerly "Victor", after the founder of the operating company, Viktor Rolff) in the area of the town of Zülpich.[5] The lake is located in the Neffelsee nature reserve, which has existed since 1979.[6]

The plan was to create a bathing beach on the lake, just like at the Zülpich water sports lake, which was also created during this time by open-cast mining in the region. This plan could not be implemented because the sand-filled embankments kept slipping. Thus, apart from nature conservation, the only task today is to function as a flood retention basin for the Neffelbach, which flows west of the lake and has an overflow structure into the lake.
