The fortress lies exactly where the river enters the first gorge, the *Qutang Gorge*, from the wide plain. In the past, this was the military key point for all of East Sichuan. Whoever controlled Baidicheng controlled access to the Sichuan Basin. That is why a fortress was built here over 2000 years ago.

When you arrive by boat today, you will first come to the *reconstructed city gate*. It is a typical Chinese castle gate from the Ming and Qing dynasties: made of grey stone, with a curved roof and thick walls.
