East Hill is an Iron Age hillfort that traditions claims was once a Roman Fort. It is suggested that this stood on or near to roads that would have led to Exeter. In 1897 a hoard of some 170 coins were discovered on East Hill which lies above Okehampton. These were said to have dated from the time of reign of Severus which would date them to no earlier than AD193. It is said that Julius Caesar visited the nearby town of Lydford. In the area highlighted here is the 'Roman Chair'; a rock outcrop that had been fashioned to look like a stone chair.
