The chapel on the summit dates back to the Holy Year 1900: a monument was erected in each Italian region for 19 centuries of redemption; for Venetia and Friuli, the choice fell on Matajur. Inaugurated on September 10, 1901, a 20 m high pyramid-shaped tower stood next to the limestone chapel – the locals therefore called the mountain “Kalona” (Column). It was struck by lightning in 1915 and completely destroyed in the Battle of Karfreit in 1917. Today's simple chapel was rebuilt in 1957 on the old foundations. There is a summit book inside.
