Ditzum Windmill

Nice gallery Dutchman in the middle of Ditzum, which is not easy to photograph optimally because of the narrow streets. It is worth climbing the mill when it is open. The view of the place from here is wonderful. So be sure to go to the gallery, if it is open. On the ground floor there is all sorts of things to be found in the local country women’s browsing room.
The first mill in ditzum was built in 1769, but burned down in a devastating village fire in 1882. A year later the new mill was up again. But luck didn’t last forever here either: a fire during World War II damaged the good piece considerably. A makeshift repair after the end of the war was not very convincing.
It is thanks to the village renewal program of the state of Lower Saxony in the 1990s that the municipality of Jemgum acquired the privately owned mill and, with the help of the mill association founded in 1998, built the mill as it can be seen today on the existing masonry. The resourceful Ditzumers obtained the knowledge from a broken mill in Dithmarschen. The gallery, mill cap and the wings, on the other hand, had to be rebuilt. Since then, the monument has been functional again with one grinding process and can be viewed.

The two-storey gallery dutch built in 1883 burned down in 1943 and was rebuilt in the same year as an engine mill. In 1945 the mill burned down again due to shelling and was then restored. Since 1988 the Ditzumer Mühlenverein has been trying to completely expand the mill. In the summer months the wings turn again and again and there are mill tours on certain dates. You can discover all sorts of things in the "Stöberstube" of the country women. Every second Sunday you can also experience East Frisian cosiness with tea and homemade cakes.

Im Jahre 1769 konnte nach zähen Bemühungen um ihre Genehmigung eine Mühle in Ditzum durch den Jemgumer Müller Conrad Crehling erbaut werden. Die Mühle befand sich im Ortskern von Ditzum, am Standort der heutigen Mühle. Ein Dorfbrand vernichtete 1882 Mühle und Scheune; der Wiederaufbau erfolgte jedoch bereits ein Jahr später. Der gemauerte Unterbau stammt aus diesem Jahr. Die Mühle wurde - zum Beispiel durch den Einbau einer Windrose - fortlaufend restauriert. 1905 erhielt sie einen zusäzlichen Motorantrieb durch einen Deutz-Dieselmotor, der in einem gesonderten Motorhäuschen stand.Im April 1943 geriet die Mühle erneut in Brand und wurde bis auf den Unterbau vernichtet. Wegen der Bedeutung der Mühle für die Versorgung der Bevölkerung wurde sie im gleichen Jahr wieder aufgebaut, jedoch nur als Motormühle mit einem flachen Dach. In den letzten Kriegstagen Ende April 1945 geriet Ditzum unter heftigen Beschuss. Infolgedessen brannten die Mühle, das Müllerhaus und die Scheine total aus.Unter grossen Mühen wurde in den ersten Nachkriegsjahren die Mühle als Motormühle wieder in Betrieb genommen und bis zum Tod des Letzten Müllers Nilolaus Steen im Jahr 1986 betrieben. Durch das Dorferneuerungsprogramm des Landes Niedersachsen (Ditzum war Modelldorf) konnte die Gemeinde Jemgum das Anwesen erwerben. 1991 bargen Mitglieder des Mühlenvereins in Lehm gemauerte Steine aus alten Abbruchhäusern. Der steinerne Unterbau der Mühle wurde damit restauriert und erhöht, damit die neue Galerei über die Dächer der angrenzenden Häuser ragen konnte.1992 wurde von einem Landungsboot der Bundesmarine im Rahmen einer Übung ein alter Mühlenachtkant aus Strübbel (Schleswig-Holstein) nach Ditzum überführt. Der Achtkant wurde vor Ort repariert und mit Schiefer gedeckt. Im September 1992 wurden der restaurierte Achtkant und die neu angefertigte Galerie auf den Mühlenstumpf aufgesetzt. Die neu angefertigten Teile (Königswelle, Kappe und Windrose wurden im Juni 1994 montiert. Es folgten die in den Niederlanden angefertigten Flügel. Nach ihrer Fertigstelling ist die heutige Mühle ein einzigartiges, technisches Denkmal aus alten und neuen Bauteilen.
