For almost fourteen centuries, the St Martin's Cross has stood in this place, a silent witness to great events on Iona. The cross stands furthest from the church and is the only original cross that has survived intact. It is carved from a single slab of stone, imported from mainland Argyll. The west face (that which is turned away from the church) is decorated with biblical scenes, while the side facing the church is richly adorned with snakes, among other things.
