The flooded valleys and canyons behind the Albanian dams – and in particular Lake Koman and Lake Fierza – are probably the most spectacular "side effect" of communist engineering in the world. The builders simply wanted electricity, but accidentally created a landscape masterpiece.

When the water was dammed on the Drin River, it flooded deep, limestone canyons. The result? Water of an incredible turquoise-emerald color wedged itself between the rocks, creating an extraordinary landscape: from large expanses to narrow passages - in places the reservoir is so narrow that, when boating, you feel like you can touch the canyon walls with your hand.
