After the medieval Jacobus de Meerderekerk of Uithuizen had become Protestant after the dismantling of Groningen, the apostle Jacobus de Meerdere remained the patron saint of the 1606 founded Roman Catholic station of Uithuizen. In 1710, the building then used was replaced by a barn church, which was extended in 1778 and 1825. Around 1860, the architect JF Scheepers (1818-1886) erected a new church a few hundred meters west of the old church on the Hoofdstraat, whose protective pattern returned under the name Jacobus de Meerderekerk.
