Located in the outskirts of the village of Regöly, the Gothic-style church preserves the memory of the former village of Somoly, which has been documented in written sources since 1389. During the Turkish campaigns, the village was devastated and burned down; the permanent flight or demise of the population may have occurred during the Fifteen Years' War. In 1622, the area is already mentioned as a wasteland under the name Somoly, and the church ruin is mentioned in the 1721 church visitation records.
