The church was built in honor of the Holy Cross, as shown by the altarpiece depicting the exaltation of the Holy Cross. This title was also used in the medieval church that survived Turkish times by the Germans, who settled here from 1722 by the founder of the modern Hőgyész, Count Claudius Florimundus Mercy. This old church, found in a dilapidated state, was repaired until the new church was completed, but it stood even after that, as in a 19th century church. s. can be seen on the etching from the beginning. The pointed arched church facing east or southeast evokes the temple style of pre-Turkish times. Behind the old two-storey town hall, which still stands today, stood this old church, next to which was the cemetery. Hőgyész's current parish church was completed in 1799 and was blessed on September 14 of the same year by provon Joseph Roller canons. Before that, they had been preparing for the construction for years, and Hőgyész, the landlord of that time, had also built it at his own expense as a parish priest, but the people also contributed with his monetary donation and work. The interior of the church was built in 1812: the sanctuary is glorious, the nave was made only with decorative elements. The Latin text on the triumphal arch of the sanctuary says, "set for sacred purposes by Count Antal Apponyi, 1842." The black marble plaque on the right side of the sanctuary facing the ship was placed by his son in memory of his father (1823). Built in the Classicist style, the present church is an architecturally and structurally outstanding church in the area. It was renovated in 1899 and 1966. The new liturgical space was built in 1974 with an erecting altar, ambo and baptismal font.
The two manual organs of the church were made in the workshop of the Anyster organ factory in Pécs in 1927.
