When the water surfaces of the Bodden freeze over in harsh winters, the last open water spots remain at this approximately 350 m wide narrow passage due to the current to and from the Großer Jasmunder Bodden, offering refuge to many water birds.
The two old ferry piers on the north and south shores have been preserved and are listed as historical monuments.
