In 1274, the theologian Thomas Aquinas was on his way from Naples to the council in Lyon when he had an accident and died in the Cistercian Abbey of Fossanova. Writings, the empty tomb, a chapel, and a depiction of his skull, which is kept as a head relic in the co-cathedral of Santa Maria Annuziata in Priverno, commemorate the great church teacher here.
