Around 1960, part of the population left the country because agricultural employment declined as a result of the mechanization of agriculture. As a result, the apartments committed themselves so far that the municipality Het Bildt considered demolishing the empty houses, mainly at Oudebildtdijk. These plans were never implemented and the houses were eventually sold relatively cheaply. Commuters, Randstadters and German tourists moved into the released houses.
