During World War II, large white stone letters ÉIRE were laid out along the Irish coast to show pilots they were flying over neutral Ireland. Each was given a number corresponding to the nearby Coast Watching Service lookout post. Éire 74 is located on the cliff at Crohy Head, southwest of Dungloe, and is one of Donegal's best-preserved markers. The stones are still clearly visible from the road and the cliff edge, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and Arranmore.
