The church dates back to the 14th century, with some chancel buttresses dating to the 13th century.
The distinctive south-western tower was added during a restoration led by architect Henry Duesbury in 1844.
It famously served as a hiding place for 200 Royalist troops in 1644. Parliamentary forces surrounded the church overnight, capturing and disarming them the next morning without any casualties.
