The Rathfranpark Wedge Tomb is an impressive megalithic monument from the early Bronze Age (c. 2500–2000 BC), located 4 km from Killala. The site is notable for an imposing gallery 3 meters long and 2 meters wide, flanked by mighty side walls with stones up to 1.8 meters high. Although the capstones are missing, the east-northeast orientation – facing the summer solstice – offers a fascinating insight into prehistoric astronomy. An extra special feature is the nearby cairn, the remnants of a stone circle destroyed in 1951.
