The main task of the Opatowice weir is to control the water flow in the Oder River. It is responsible for directing the appropriate amount of water to the Flood Channel and the Navigation Channel (towards Barthel / Bartoszowice), thereby protecting the center of Wrocław from flooding, while maintaining the correct water level for urban navigation.

The first weir in this place was built during the great regulation of the Oder River at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries (in the years 1891–1897) as a needle weir.
In the years 1981–1985, the structure underwent a complete modernization. The old mechanism was replaced with a modern sector weir with three spans.
