The station was built in the course of the construction of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn between Eggenburg and Gmünd in the 1860s and opened under the name Sigmundsherberg-Horn. Despite the fact that the station was originally not intended (the Franz-Josefs-Bahn was originally to be built over Horn), it quickly developed into a railway junction with the construction of the railway line Zellerndorf-Sigmundsherberg and Kamptalbahn. The station has always been a stopover for the international long-distance trains that went to Prague, Berlin and Hamburg. Special importance came to the station in the First World War due to the prisoner of war camp Sigmundsherberg, since the goods were handled here. Starting with the outsourcing of international freight traffic to the northern railway, the station was demoted to the Nahverkehrshalt with change of the route of long-distance trains such as the Vindobona.

In 1985 there were major changes, as the Franz-Josefs-Bahn between Absdorf-Hippersdorf and Sigmundsherberg was electrified. Henceforth, there was therefore a Umspannzwang of electric on diesel locomotives. In 1995, with the electrification of the line to Gmünd the station was modernized and built platforms that allow a ground-level boarding in barrier-free trains.
