The prisoner of war camp Sigmundsherberg was one of the largest prisoner of war camps of the Danube monarchy during the First World War.

The first nine deceased prisoners were buried in the local cemeteries of Rodingersdorf and Maigen near Sigmundsherberg. For all others, the specially built camp cemetery was already available. According to the memorial stone, more than 2,400 soldiers (of whom 2,363 were Italians) were buried on the graveyard, which is now off the route of the Kaiser Franz Joseph Railway. In 1917, Italian prisoners of war erected a statue in the form of a statue of a woman dedicated to the deceased prisoners of war. After the war, this monument was overbuilt with a small chapel.
