Hot Creek flows through the Long Valley Volcanic Caldera's resurgent dome, which is the world's largest. It passes through hot springs, and its warm water is home to a variety of trout and is also used for the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery. Swimming in the creek has been prohibited since 2006 due to the rise in geothermal activity, and it remains closed to this day (2024). However, many other hot springs are located nearby that are accessible to swimmers.
Hot Creek cuts into part of the resurgent dome of the Long Valley Vulcanic Caldera (the largest in the world) and passes through hot springs. The warm water of Hot Creek supports many trout, and is used at the Hot Creek Fish Hatchery. The creek was closed to swimming in 2006 after geothermal activity in the area increased, and is still closed as of 2017. There are a number of other hot springs in the area, some of which are open to bathers. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hot_Creek_(Mono_County,_California)
A short distance downstream from where the geothermally heated springs warm up the stream, the water temperature is still a little higher but moderate, perfect for the nutrients that feed the small organisms the trout thrive on.
